Philippines to Begin Issuing Visas for Digital Nomads Without Tax Benefits

ESSENTIAL NOTES

  1. Without proposing any tax measures, the Philippines will begin to grant visas to digital nomads.
  2. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines was urged by the Private Sector Advisory Council for Tourism (PSAC-Tourism) to grant visas devoid of tax measures.
  3. The Philippines made this move in an effort to grow the travel and tourism industry.

The idea to grant digital nomad visas free of tax initiatives has the backing of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines.

The decision was made in response to appeals made to the President by the Private Sector Advisory Council for Tourism (PSAC-Tourism), urging him to allow the issuing of remote work or nomad visas without imposing tax schemes.

The PSAC-tourist verified in a statement that the President agreed with their plan to boost tourist revenue from visitors entering the nation via the Digital Nomad Visa.

“[President Marcos] supports this interim solution and has directed the Office of the Executive Secretary to draft the EO and select a pilot country for the initiative”
PSAC-Tourism

Issuing nomad visas, in the opinion of PSAC-Tourism official Lucio Tan III, would draw in long-term foreign tourists.

“We need to issue nomad visas quickly to attract long-stay tourists. Other countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia are already benefiting from this approach.”

One of the things that will support the Philippines’ continued economic growth was the establishment of the Digital Nomad Visa. The country’s government announced the launch of this visa in June 2023.

The number of foreign visitors visiting the Philippines has increased significantly. The Department of Tourism (DOT) of the Philippines reports that over two million foreign visitors came to the country between January 1 and March 31 of this year.

According to this, the nation’s tourist industry brought in over PHP 157.62 billion in revenue in the first three months of 2024, representing a recovery rate of almost 120.70 percent from the PHP 130.59 billion earned during the same period in 2019.

Authorities in the Philippines revealed plans last year to draw 15 million to 16 million tourists, who would earn between $26 billion and $27 billion in revenue from tourism by 2024.

According to the Department’s data, as of April 24, 2024, the Philippines had registered 2,010,522 foreign visitors. Of these, foreign visitors accounted for 94.21 percent (1,894,076) of the country’s total international arrivals, with 116,446 Filipinos living abroad making up the remaining 5.79 percent.

According to the data, there were 1,746,630 foreign arrivals registered in the first three months of this year, representing a 15.11 percent rise over the same period last year.
