Ordinary visa

Foreign visitors who want to visit Tanzania for tourism, vacation, leisure, or to visit family and friends are given the usual visa.

Additionally, it may be used for conferences, humanitarian and charitable endeavors in Tanzania, as well as any other activity that is permitted by law. It may also be used for receiving medical attention.

All visitors to Tanzania for tourism are required to get a single-entry visa, which is valid for 3 months (with the exception of US nationals, who must apply for a multiple-entry visa).

Business visa

  • proof of the assignment to be conducted for a period of a maximum of three months

Multiple-entry visa

Travelers who visit the United Republic of Tanzania regularly are eligible for the multiple-entry visa. The visa is valid for up to a year, however each visit cannot last longer than three months.

  • an invitation letter from the spouse or child and their passport (for family visits)
  • a marriage certificate or birth certificate (for family visits)
  • a passport/national ID of the spouse/child, or effective residence permit if the spouse or child is a resident (for family visits).

Transit visa

The transit visa is an entry permit that allows travelers to travel through Tanzania on their way to another location. The maximum stay is seven days.

The following documents must be included with the transit visa application:

  • a valid passport
  • an entry visa to the next destination country (if necessary)
  • an onward ticket.

Student visa

Foreign research students, interns, volunteers, exchange students, and prospective students who have been accepted to accredited institutions in Tanzania may apply for a student visa.

Holders of diplomatic, service, or official passports or travel credentials of recognized international organizations who enter Tanzania on business are granted a free Tanzania visa.

Passports in good standing must be presented by applicants.
