Nepal is a beautiful mountainous country located in South Asia. If you want to visit this destination, check the documents required to apply for a visa and enjoy your trip to the Himalayas.

Visa to Nepal

A Nepal visa is mandatory for anyone wishing to enter the country, except for Indian citizens who can enjoy their trip to Nepal without a visa.

If you are visiting Nepal, you need to fill out the online e-Visa application form to apply for a Tourist Visa and pay the required processing fee. An official permit will be issued to you by border agents upon your arrival in the country. The process is very simple and quick.

Each entry permit you receive upon arrival at your chosen port of entry is a Nepal tourist visa. If you want to stay in the country for reasons other than tourism, go to the Department of Immigration, where you can change your visa type.

Regular visa

Foreign visitors are usually advised to fill out an online application form and then obtain a visa upon arrival in Nepal. However, if you want to avoid long queues at border checkpoints, you can apply for a regular visa. Visit the Nepali diplomatic mission stationed in your country, where you can obtain an entry permit to Nepal. It will be valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Visa on arrival

A visa on arrival is a type of permit that you can get at any point of entry (airport or border gate) when visiting another country. To get a Nepal visa on arrival, first fill out the application form. If you have done this electronically before your trip, simply give the agent a printed copy confirming your request. Next, make the required payment for the visa. Finally, present your passport to the staff and you're done.

electronic visa

All foreigners are required to apply for an eVisa online (also known as pre-visa). It was introduced by the Nepal government to speed up the check-in process upon arrival. To continue the application, you need a good Internet connection and a working electronic device. Electronic visa applicants must still follow visa application procedures upon arrival at border control. The online application grants you a Nepal tourist visa, a multiple-entry permit, valid for 15, 30 or 90 days. Visa required in advance

There are 12 countries whose citizens must apply for a visa before traveling:
Afghanistan, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Liberia, Nigeria, Palestine, Somalia, Syria and Zimbabwe. If one of these destinations is your place of origin, consider submitting your application as soon as possible.

General Nepal Visa Requirements

You should start applying for your Nepal visa online. This form highlights all the documents required when applying for a visa at port of entry or changing your visa type with the Department of Immigration. Some required documents for anyone wanting to enter Nepal:

  • Copy of online visa application confirmation
  • Copy of passport valid for the next 6 months
  • proof of COVID-19 vaccination (or negative PCR test result)

Types of Nepal Visa

You can visit Nepal for many reasons, but remember that each visit requires a different visa. To change your visa type, visit the Immigration Department and present the appropriate supporting documents.

Tourist Visa

 Tourist visa is the main type of visa for Nepal. It is issued to all foreign citizens who wish to visit the country for recreational and tourist purposes. The permit allows multiple entries into the country for a maximum period of 90 days. Requirements include:

  • online application confirmation
  • valid passport
  • recent passport-size picture
  • return ticket
  • proof of accommodation in Nepal
  • proof of good financial standing
  • proof of visa fee payment

Work Visa

If you intend to work in Nepal, you must apply for a work visa. Its type can be changed in relation to tourist visas at the Ministry of Immigration upon presentation of the appropriate documents:

  • online application confirmation
  • valid passport
  • copy of the Nepal Tourist Visa
  • proof of visa fee payment
  • work permit from the Department of Labor
  • work agreement from the Nepal Ministry of Home Affairs
  • recommendation letter from the Nepal Ministry of Labor
  • appointment letter or employment contract

Business Visa

 Business visas are issued to foreign citizens engaging in business activities, attending business meetings, and making investments. It can be converted from a Tourist Visa upon presentation of the appropriate documents:

  • online application confirmation
  • valid passport
  • copy of the Nepal Tourist Visa
  • proof of visa fee payment
  • copy of the Company’s Registration Certificate
  • recommendation letter and foreign acceptance letter
  • business progress report from the Department of Industry

Press Visa

Press visas are recommended for journalists and press representatives working in Nepal. Applying for this visa type requires:

  • Confirm your application online
  • valid passport
  • Copy of Nepal tourist visa
  • Proof of payment of visa fee
  • letter of recommendation from the Department of Public Information
  • Special ID card of Nepal Press Council

Marriage Visa

Marriage visas are issued to foreigners who wish to reunite with their Nepali spouses residing in Nepal. The application requires the presence of the spouse and necessary documents including:

  • Confirm your application online
  • valid passport
  • Copy of Nepal tourist visa
  • Proof of payment of visa fee
  • Marriage registration certificate (if foreigner, accompanied by a confirmation letter from the embassy)

Relationship Visa

You can apply for a Relationship Visa if you are a family member of a Nepali citizen. Remember that this relative must be present with you during your visit to the Immigration Department and present the necessary documents:

  • Copy of Nepal tourist visa
  • Proof of payment of visa fee
  • relationship certificate or other evidence of parents
  • citizenship certificate of your relative

Study Visa

Student visas are issued to those who intend to attend university, do research in Nepal or teach. The most important documents for both students and teachers are the respective letters of recommendation from the Nepal government.

  • Proof of payment of visa fee
    proof of good financial situation (for students)
  • Recommendation letter and acceptance letter from the Ministry of Education (for students)
  • Appointment letter and general agreement from Nepal educational institution (for researchers)

Residential Visa

If you want to permanently move to Nepal, you need to apply for a Residential Visa. You will not be permitted to perform any paid work, but you may reside freely in the country. The procedure requires:

  • online application confirmation
  • valid passport
  • copy of the Nepal Tourist Visa
  • proof of visa fee payment
  • bank statement and proof of regular yearly income
  • character certificate, health certificate, and no objection certificate from the Nepal Embassy

Diplomatic Visa

Applying for a diplomatic visa requires you to have a diplomatic passport. It will be valid for 30 days from the date of entry. You need to fill in the online registration form and submit the required documents to the Nepal Embassy including:

  • online application confirmation
  • letter from the respective foreign Ministry or Department
  • original of the diplomatic passport
  • copy of the diplomatic passport

Official Visa

You are eligible for an official visa if you are a member of a diplomatic mission in Nepal, a technical expert working in Nepal, a United Nations official or simply an official passport holder. This visa can be applied for at the embassy after completing online registration. The same documents are required as in the case of diplomatic visas.

Transit Visa

A transit visa on arrival allows you to stay in Nepal for 24 hours. To obtain this permit, present immigration officials with a printout of your online application form, a copy of your valid passport, and additional proof of travel (e.g., airline ticket). 

Visa Application

The application process consists of two stages. You must first complete your online registration. Then, collect your visa upon arrival in the country.

You must provide an online registration questionnaire with relevant personal information, such as full name, date of birth, nationality, contact details, chosen embassy or consulate, household number passport and visa type you want to apply for.

You will also be asked to pay a processing fee. Once the transaction is processed, you will receive an online e-Visa registration confirmation to your email address. You must present it along with supporting documents to immigration officials in Nepal.

Validity

All visa types except the transit visa allow you to visit Nepal for 15, 30 or 90 days. With this multiple travel permit, you can cross the border multiple times. Alternatively, you can extend your stay but remember to start the process at least 15 days before the expiration date.

International Traveler Arrival Form

The health declaration form for international travelers is a mandatory health declaration related to COVID-19, introduced by the Nepali authorities. It requests information about the general health condition and accommodation of tourists in Nepal. It must be registered online and printed in advance.
