Australia Visa Requirements

Australia e-Visa Application

Australia e-Visa: Basic information

The Australian e-visa is a type of electronic visa, introduced by the Australian Government on October 27, 2008 to speed up the visa application process using an online application form.
It is offered in two types.
Australia eVisitor or ETA are both electronic travel authorization documents that allow eligible citizens to apply for a visa online by completing an application form.

The only difference between the Australian ETA and eVisitor is the list of eligible countries.

EU citizens can apply for an eVisitor subclass 651 visa; while the Australian ETA 601 subclass is available in eight regulated countries.
Both ETA and eVisitor approved in Australia are linked to the traveler's passport and can be used for any tour involving travel, business or public transport.
All travelers must have a valid eVisa when arriving in Australia.
Visa applications must be submitted online and cost 49 EUR for both types.
Both entry permits are valid for 12 months and allow visitors to visit Australia multiple times within 3 months.

What Is the Electronic Travel Authority (eTA) for Australia?

The Australian ETA (also known as the Subclass 601 visa) is an electronic permit that allows the holder to travel to Australia for tourism, family or business purposes.
You can apply for ETA completely online at home.
Applying for a visa is much simpler and faster because it is done completely online, there are almost no paperwork requirements and you will have it within 24 hours.
Your ETA application is recorded in an online database and linked to your passport number, so you don't need to go to the Australian embassy and get a stamp.

Australia offers two types of electronic visas to all passport holders from eligible countries, which are:

ETA (subclass 601)

The Australia ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) is a multiple-entry visa that is valid for one year (12 months) and allows its holder to visit Australia multiple times.
Each visit can last up to 3 months (90 days) at a time.
ETAs may be issued for the following purposes:

tourism:
All types of recreational activities are allowed with an ETA in Australia.
Visit friends and family, go on vacation, explore tourist attractions or simply relax during your vacation.
business:
Business ETAs allow all Australian visitors to conduct business, negotiate partnerships, seek business opportunities or attend conferences.

eVisitor visa (subclass 651)

eVisitor is an Australian electronic visa exclusively for citizens from all European countries.
It serves as a multiple-entry visa valid for one year.
Visitors from European countries can visit Australia multiple times, with each stay lasting up to 3 months.
Use your eVisitor in Australia to:

tourism:
Suitable for family visits, visiting friends, leisure activities, traveling to Australia, exploring the country or going on vacation.
business:
Participate in training, attend a business meeting or conference, organize future cooperation or visit your business partners in Australia.

The application process is the same regardless of which Australian e-visa you qualify for. The only document you need is a valid passport.

Note! Please ensure that you provide your details correctly in the application form as you will not need to attach your passport photo.

Usually, the whole process takes a few days, but very often, applications get approved on the same day.

Please remember that the entire visa process and the processing time are at the Australian Immigration Service’s discretion.

The Australian ETA and eVisitor visas are multiple entry permits, both valid for one year (12 months) from the date of issue.

Please note that ETA and eVisitor are linked to the traveler’s passport. Whenever your passport expires, if you change any data or lose this document, your Australian visa online will no longer be valid.

Australian eVisa holders can visit the country multiple times within a one-year validity period. Each visit can last up to 3 months (90 days) at a time. If you want to return, you must leave Australia for at least 3 days. You are then allowed to return for another 3 months (if those 3 months are within the validity period of your eVisa).

Anyone traveling through Australia must have an Australian e-Visa, regardless of the length of your stay in the country.

Register online at least 3 business days before your trip using any compatible device!

You will receive your approved eVisa via email in a PDF form.

Australia’s e-Visa automatically assigns your passport number, so you don’t need to print documents or present them at the point of entry.
All you need to do is bring the valid passport you used when filling out the application.

What If My ETA Australia Application Requires Further Processing?

Sometimes the Home Office may ask you to provide additional information and documents before issuing an ETA.
You will receive an email notifying you that your application has been submitted for further processing, in which case you will need to complete an “Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) Request Form for Further Processing” and submit supporting documents.

The documents and information you may be asked to submit are:
  • Copy of the personal information page in your passport (the page with your name and photo).
  • A copy of both sides of your ID card.
  • Evidence that you intend to visit Australia temporarily solely for tourism or to participate in guest business activities.
  • Information about why you are considering visiting Australia
  • Proof of your stay and planned activities, such as accommodation reservations or pre-booked flights.
  • You do not need to complete payment, just booking is enough.

  • List of your companions, including your name, date of birth, and relationship.
  • A list of family members or friends you have in Australia, including their names, dates of birth and residence status.
  • Your bank statements for the past three months.
  • Evidence of employment or other commitments demonstrating your intention to return to your home country after your trip to Australia, such as a letter from your employer.

How Long Does It Take to Get an ETA?

The application process takes just a few minutes, and you'll know if your application has been approved the same day via email.
In the meantime, you can check your ETA status on the same website where you registered.

If there are problems with your application, you may also receive a response for one of the following reasons:

  • Your application will be sent for further review.
  • You can use the Check ETA option to see if a decision has been made.
  • You must go to the nearest Australian visa office to reapply in person.

What Can I Do With an ETA?

If you receive an ETA, you can visit Australia multiple times and stay there for up to three months on each trip.

During this time, you can:

  • Visit Australia as a tourist.
  • Visit family and friends.
  • For business.
  • This means you can attend business meetings, trainings, negotiations, seminars, sign or amend business contracts, and more.
  • You cannot work and be paid by an Australian or Australian-based employer or sell goods and products.
  • Follow a short-term study program (no more than three months).

How Much Does an ETA Cost?

When you sign up for an Australian ETA, you'll only pay the AUD 20 service fee using your credit or debit card.

Can I Extend the ETA?

If you want to extend your stay in Australia without leaving the country, you will need to go to your nearest Australian immigration office and apply for an ETA (Visa 601).
You will need to do this at least two weeks before your current ETA visa expires.

If you are outside Australia and your ETA has expired or is about to expire, you will need to apply for a new one.

Who Issues an ETA?

The agency responsible for assessing and making a decision on your ETA is the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
Even if you apply through a visa agency or office, the application is still forwarded to the DHA for a final decision.
